re. possibly purchase of locally available Charade, seller has replied, car is still for sale, but he works nights, and I suspect the low profit margin is lowering his desire to race around and fulfil all my requests, but perhaps a weekend test drive is in my future?

If you don't add bull bars, fog lights and gravel tires if you get the car you're doing it wrong. Also most soul sucking appliances can be fun if you drive it like you stole it.

do snow tyres count? my intent would be to make a daily driver/commuter car, and in winter that would mean something to pull the handbrake on and not cry if it hits a snow bank

Snow tires work too, sounds like it could make a fun little car for winter duty. Also I just finished reading the build thread on that GTti charade, if they weren't so rare I'd be trying to hunt one down since I'm looking for a small car myself.

yeah, I suspect rarity of parts may become an issue should I actually buy it, but from some online reading it looks like a lot of parts can be stolen from other models and brands. VW suspension, honda radiators, standard 4x100 brake rotors etc etc. So, if I can get an engine gasket kit and do timing belts etc should be a reliable daily

Yeah on such a simple car it shouldn't be too hard finding mechanical parts that fit. Most parts will have been used on something else from the same supplier to save monies when it was being produced.
